The NSW Public Libraries Association (NSWPLA) is is the peak body for public libraries across NSW providing advocacy, network opportunities, professional development, collaboration, and recognition for the sector. NSWPLA approached Harley Johnston Design to renew their brand. We started with a workshop to help form a strategy for the NSWPLA going forward.
The first thing most people think of when you say library is books. While modern libraries are much more than a place to borrow books, the book is forever linked to libraries. One core truth of libraries is that they are a physical space for human connection. They offer a variety of services for all ages and build community in the process. The logo combines a building and a book to create an open logo mark.

The logo mark is paired with a headline typeface that is bold and condensed, mimicking the spines of books on a shelf. The wide colour palette was chosen with flexibility in mind and draws from the colourful plastic chairs that are common in government buildings. The resulting identity creates a strong modern and recognisable brand identity that will serve the NSWPLA for many years to come.

“We have engaged Harley for two branding projects, for the NSW Public Libraries Association and also for our annual conference, SWITCH. On both occasions Harley really worked to understand us and listen to what we stand for. Harley was able to take ideas that were discussed and turn them into creative designs that captured the essence of our association and our conference. Harley was a pleasure to work with, he was understanding and always came up with useful suggestions. We have had great feedback on both projects. If you are looking for a designer who will really listen and create well thought out solutions I would highly recommend Harley”
